Modernising St Joseph’s College Sixth Form Centre, Ipswich
St Joseph’s College Sixth Form Centre reached out to Source One Consulting to reimagine their Study Area.
They had a clear goal for the space: to create a refreshed, functional space where students could feel calm, focused, and inspired.
“We are totally in love with the Sixth Form Centre—you have completely revived the area for us.“
Katherine Simpson-Jacobs, Head of Sixth Form
The Challenge
St Joseph’s College Sixth Form Centre, spearheaded by Head of Sixth Form, Katherine Simpson-Jacobs sought to modernise their Study Area with updated décor and versatile furniture. Their vision was to design a peaceful and practical environment that would support both studying and relaxation for students.
The Solution
Collaborative Planning
Katherine worked closely with Source One team members, Lisa and Chloe, to bring her vision to life. Together, they developed detailed plans and mood boards, involving staff and students in the design process. This engagement allowed everyone to feel a sense of ownership over the transformation, ensuring the final design met the needs and aspirations of the Sixth Form community.
Design Concept
The colour scheme centred on a neutral palette of Natural Rustic Oak wood finishes, complemented by white and grey tones for fabrics and metalwork. Green and grey accents were introduced in the seating upholstery to promote a sense of calm and connection to nature.
Key features included:
- Demountable Partitioning: A small, ceiling-less staff office was installed to maintain the aesthetic openness of the high-ceilinged space while offering separation from students.
- Updated Décor: The dated bright pink walls were replaced with neutral white and olive-green accent walls to create a soothing ambiance.
- Versatile Furniture: Lightweight, stackable chairs, modular seating, and lockable planter units ensured the space could be easily reconfigured to meet changing needs.
Biophilic Enhancements
A standout feature was the installation of planter units filled with over 700 artificial plants and nearly 10 kilograms of moss. Chloe and the team meticulously arranged the greenery to create visually stunning displays that bring the outdoors inside. These planters, set on lockable castors, not only enhance the aesthetic but also serve as flexible room dividers.
Research shows that plants can reduce stress and anxiety—perfect for a study environment.
“It is brilliant to see how much the space has helped the students already, in such a short space of time—we can’t thank you enough!“

Katherine Simpson-Jacobs, Head of Sixth Form, shared:
“We are totally in love with the Sixth Form Centre—you have completely revived the area for us. We had students racing each other to be the first to sit on the booths, and everyone has promised to look after the area. It is brilliant to see how much the space has helped the students already, in such a short space of time—we can’t thank you enough!”
