What is impulse noise testing?

Impulse noise testing is a method of measuring reverberation time (RT) in a room. A short, sharp sound like a balloon pop is released, and sensors measure how long the sound takes to decay. This helps identify exactly how much absorption is needed to reach recommended levels.

But the goal isn’t silence either. A space that’s too dead has its own problems… voices carry strangely, it feels uncomfortable, and the environment becomes oddly tense.

What you’re actually after is balance. A space where people can think, talk and meet without fighting the room.

We’ve been improving workplaces since 2002 – and acoustic work has been part of that from the start, particularly as open-plan offices have become the norm and noise has become one of the most common complaints we hear.

How we approach it

A lot of businesses try the obvious things first — rearranging furniture, moving noisy equipment, setting guidelines about phone calls. Sometimes that’s enough. Often it isn’t.

When the noise problem persists, it usually needs a measured approach rather than a best guess.

We start by testing the space. Using impulse noise testing, we measure reverberation times to understand exactly how sound is behaving in your rooms. That tells us what’s actually causing the problem and how much treatment is needed to fix it — not more, not less.

From there we recommend the right combination of solutions, install them properly and measure the results. If more adjustment is needed, we come back and do it. We’re not in the habit of throwing products at a problem and hoping for the best.

What we use to fix it

Depending on what the testing shows, we draw on a range of acoustic solutions. Most projects use a combination.

Ceiling panels and wall absorption

Ceiling tiles and wall panels absorb reflected sound from hard surfaces… glass, concrete, steel, exposed brick. They’re the most common treatment in open-plan offices and meeting rooms, and they make a significant difference to echo and general noise levels. Modern acoustic panels are also far less intrusive than people expect, many are designed to look good as well as perform.
Partitions and acoustic screens

Where noise is travelling across an open space, partitions and dense-core screens stop it spreading. These work particularly well in offices that sit alongside warehouses or production areas, or where one part of the office generates noise that the rest of the team has to work through.

Office pods and booths

When someone needs genuine privacy for a call, a confidential conversation or focused work, a pod or booth is often the most practical answer. They go in quickly, don’t require building works and can be relocated if the layout changes.
Sound masking systems

In some environments – particularly healthcare settings, HR teams or open-plan offices where speech privacy matters – a gentle background sound system can make a significant difference. It doesn’t eliminate noise, but it raises the ambient level enough that conversations stop carrying across the room.

Noise is usually a symptom of a wider layout issue, and it’s common for acoustic work to open up a broader conversation about the space.

We regularly start with a noise problem and end up talking about partitioning, flooring, ceilings or a fuller office refurbishment. That’s not something we push… it’s just what tends to happen when people start looking at what’s actually causing the problem.

Workplace Acoustics FAQs

Does acoustic treatment actually work, or is it just deadening the sound?

Done properly, yes, it works. The key is testing before installing, so you know exactly what you’re dealing with and what level of treatment is needed. What we’re aiming for is better balance, not a muffled or unnatural environment. A well-treated space sounds noticeably more comfortable and calm without feeling strange.

Will it take up much space? We don’t have a lot to spare.

Less than most people expect. Ceiling panels don’t take up floor space at all. Wall panels are typically 50-100mm deep. Pods and screens are more substantial, but we only recommend them where they’re genuinely needed. Part of our job is finding solutions that fit the space you have, not ones that eat into it.

Is it worth the money? We’re not sure the problem is bad enough to justify the cost.

That’s worth a conversation before you commit to anything. Some noise problems are significant enough to affect productivity, wellbeing and staff retention in ways that cost far more than the treatment. Others are manageable with a few simple changes. We’ll give you an honest view of which category yours falls into – including if it turns out you don’t need us.

How disruptive is the installation?

Most acoustic installations are straightforward and can be planned around your working day. Ceiling panel work typically takes one to two days depending on the area involved. Pods and screens can usually go in within a day. We’ll talk through timing with you before anything starts.

Do you need to come and see the space first?

For anything beyond a simple screen or panel installation, yes, and we’d want to. Testing the space gives us the information we need to recommend the right solution. We’d rather spend an hour with you upfront than install something that doesn’t fully solve the problem.

What’s the difference between soundproofing and acoustic treatment?

Soundproofing stops noise passing through walls, floors and ceilings – it’s about blocking sound. Acoustic treatment improves how sound behaves within a room – reducing echo, reverberation and the way noise carries. Most commercial office noise problems are acoustic rather than soundproofing issues, which is why treatment tends to be the more practical and cost-effective route.
