Office ergonomics: a few simple steps to improving health & well-being

It’s acknowledged by experts that good posture is important to your health and well-being and yet many of us are guilty of not considering office ergonomics in our work place or when working from home.

There are many ways to improve your posture at work and most are quick and easy to carry out.

Setting up your working space

There are just a few simple steps involved in setting up your chair, desk and pc to improve your posture at work including:

  • Chair: adjusting back rest and seat height to ensure a good sitting position
  • Desk: laying out your desk with things like PC keyboard and mouse within the ideal reach zone
  • PC: ensuring that you are close enough to the screen and it’s within your visual range

We think the short video below provides a simple and easy explanation of office ergonomics and how to set up your seat, desk and computer.

Office ergonomics: furniture

Increasingly office furniture is designed with the need to be ergonomically friendly.

Much effort has gone in to improving the support provided by office chairs. Features such as adjustable heights, adjustable back support and lumber support are now built-in to most good quality chairs.

You can also purchase products such as further back support and foot rests to help you comfortably reach the floor.

Pneumatic seat cushions

As understanding has grown about the need for flexible movement other advances have included the development of pneumatic seat cushions. These promote health, well-being and a good performance of daily work through regular and automatic natural change of the sitting posture, check out the video below:

Adjustable height desks

While the focus is rightly on chairs, adjustable height desk and table solutions can also be helpful to encouraging good posture.

This can either be by adjusting the table height to your seating position or by raising the desk, creating a desk you can stand at (for meetings etc).
