Associated British Ports were looking to refurbish the Port Managers office space at their Ipswich Docks site. The extensive project included office space, reception area and washrooms.

About the Old Custom House

Custom House, Associated British Ports, IpswichThe Old Custom House is the finest building on Ipswich Waterfront. It’s impressive and striking frontage combines two stairways with stone balustrades befitting the classic style of the building.

The Custom House dates back to 1845, and was designed by John Medland Clark, a local architect who won a competition for the design of the building.

It was important to us that the work on the inside matched the impressive quality of the outside.

Building works

Given the age of the building and the state of the internal walls, prior to any new decoration and furniture fitting Source One needed to complete a range of building work including:

  • Taking some of the walls back to their original brickwork and building them out again
  • Plastering and resurfacing the walls
  • Removing all old wall panelling
  • Replacing ceilings
  • New washroom suite with safety flooring and built-in cupboards

Lighting, flooring & decor

Once the building structure was sound and a good base, we were able to move on to updating the decor including:

  • Decoration
  • Fitting new doors
  • Installing LED lighting
  • Installing new feature lighting
  • Replacing the flooring and new carpets for the the reception area
  • Fireplace refurbishment
  • Supplying and install LED screen/TV - power and data
  • New sign boards
  • New blinds

Furniture for office & reception

Finally we were able to fit out the office spaces with high quality furniture.

Paul Ager of Associated British Ports comments:

"From the initial stages of working through the specification and costings, I was impressed with Lisa’s communication and the help and support that she was offering with regards to specifications and potential solutions.

Working with a company that could offer the “complete package” was also important to us, and it was comforting to know that we were working with a professional company who shared our ethos towards Health & Safety and Quality.

With any project communication was key and nothing was too much trouble for Lisa and Source One, either within work hours or very often outside of the norm.

With our office being of historic importance it was vital that the works were carried out to the highest standards and everyone that has visited since has been very complimentary with the final results.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Source One."
